Culture Module Reflection

For my culture module I chose to do a project on the topic of memes. One of the suggestions for a project under the meme tab was to make your own meme. After reading an article about surreal memes, I decided to make my own surreal meme. I used the free online photo editor Canva to create my meme. I made sure to use the “surreal meme” head, which is used very commonly in surreal memes, in my own meme. I overlaid the head multiple times over a background image of a lawn. I then put text that said reject society return to cow over the layered images. I added a picture of a cow last with text underneath that said got milk. I tried to only use free stock images I found on google images in the creation of my meme.

Surreal memes are important to know about because they provide one of the last means of escape on the internet. People can express and share their feelings in a way that doesn’t feel overly revealing. They’re also a way to connect with and feel understood by other humans. For example, when I sat down to make the meme, I was very stressed, but making the meme actually made me feel a lot better. I then shared the meme with my friends and family because I wanted to make them laugh. I also found that when I did my presentation in class, it highly amused my classmates. My surreal meme was able to provide a brief escape from reality to people by amusing them. I believe memes and surreal memes will continue to exist as long as the internet exists, and I plan to continue making memes into the future as a way to blow off stress for myself and for my friends and family. I posted the meme I made below
